What is Lab Rescue?

Labrador Retriever Adoption Service is a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers who are dedicated
to rescuing and re-homing Labrador Retrievers located in Ontario, Canada. It is our mission to place
these loving labs in a home that provides them with the safety and security to live the happy lives they so
truly deserve and to educate the public on responsibility of proper pet ownership.

Where does Lab Rescue get its dogs from?

Many of the Labs we receive from owners are for “life” reasons such as divorce, new life circumstances
(children), finances, work schedules, allergies, moving, owner passes away, the dog requires medical
treatment, etc. Individuals also give up their Labs because they have bought them on impulse and have
not truly considered the commitment of time and energy that is required to properly care for a dog.
Some of the labs come from shelters or humane societies. We attempt to find out the background on
all Labs received into our rescue program but with shelters it can be difficult and if little is known a
temperament assessment will be conducted prior to placing the dog with a foster family.

Why do you need a whole organization dedicated to just one breed?

Labrador Retrievers are the most popular breed in Canada and the United States, and that is why so
many need to be rescued. The American Kennel Club has ranked the Labrador Retriever breed as the
number one most popular breed in American for well over 10 years. In addition to the Registered Kennels
that breed labs that are plenty of other people who breed Labs irresponsibly. A puppy is often placed in a
poorly selected home with owners who have no idea of what it takes to train and care for a dog. Many
people just do not know what it takes to be a responsible dog owner nor do they consider the financial
cost of owning a dog. The dog then ends up not being properly cared for or the people decide they no
longer want the dog. Many of our Labs simply need someone to love them and give them a healthy,
happy home that provides the love and security they so truly deserve.

How does the Lab Rescue process work?

Once a dog is surrendered to Lab Rescue they will are evaluated, (spayed/neutered if it has not already
been done by the current owner), immunized (and any other medical care that might be necessary),
micro-chipped and adopted. If the surrendered Lab can not reside in its current household they will be
placed in a temporary foster home until a new loving permanent home can be located to place them in.

Revenues necessary to cover the ongoing expenses of rescuing and re-homing Labs are generated
primarily through donations and fundraising activities.
